This week we have an exceptional book by Jason Sleek and Tom Barton about success, focus and mental training. It´s about using your most powerful tool; your Mind, building success patterns into habit forming principles.

This book is for anyone who wants to improve in any area of endeavor. Jason is the director of sports Psychology for the St Louis Cardinals.

Jason Sleek is a high performance coach. He has another 2 awesome books on the subject. The “10-Minute Toughness”, and “Executive Toughness”.  Both great books.

To get the full benefit of this book you will have to read it. This is a book you can read it in a day, but the benefits, if you practice the principles, will last for a lifetime. It´s very practical book.

Knowing “something” will not make a difference unless you do something about that “something”.

Most people confuse being busy with being productive. The most successful people are productive. They focus and do the most important things. They accomplish more of the important stuff.

The key to success is about prioritization. It’s probably the most underrated skill of the high achievers, and it’s the biggest difference between being busy and being productive, or being average and being exceptional.

The biggest obstacle towards high achievement is committing too much, and getting overwhelm with too many things that fight for your attention and time.

Success is not so much about time management, but about time maximization.
Time maximization helps you create more time.

Make success permanent and failure temporary by ALWAYS IMPROVING yourself.

Here are some of the most important ideas and action steps I got from Organize Tomorrow Today;

The best coaches know how to make a person tick; they are practical physiologist.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is that they try to change too many things at the same time (or achieve too many things).

———————————–

ORGANIZE TOMORROW TODAY:

If you are focusing on everything, you are focusing on nothing.

There is solid evidence that writing a list is more powerful than having the list in your head, or even writing it digitally (research by Pam Mueller and Dan Oppenheimer from Princeton University and UCLA).

This is because when you are handwriting, it activates the RAS, the famous reticular activating system (the system helps you eliminate 99% of what’s happening around you, as well as taking information from your “instant access” folder into the “deep storage” one, in your mind)

Write down the 3-MOST IMPORTANT things you need to get done next day. Write it down as well as the time their completion. (the key here is you are writing them one day in advance)

Ask yourself, what are the 3-most important things I have to get done tomorrow? and what is number one?

To see the destructive power of not being organize and not optimizing your time, ask yourself, what will happen if I don’t organize tomorrow?

Saturating people with information and things to do tends to overwhelm and freeze them.

———————————

OPEN SPACE:

This is your “time” time frame, meaning this is the chunk of time you are thinking, and living in. Some people think in terms of days, others in hours, really busy people tend to think in much smaller units, like 5 minutes’ intervals.

What unit time do you think in right now?

The more successful you become, the smaller the unit of time you must think in.

TOP 7 TIME WASTER:

1. Personal email
2. Facebook (also Instagram, snapchat…etc)
3. ESPN online
4. The Kardashians (they earn money by you watching them, but you go broke)
5. Online News
6.Shopping sites
7.Google searches

(I would add also Netflix)

——————————–

WIN YOUR FIGHT-THRUS:

Our habits are in constant state of formation.
Success is not so much about brilliance but about being consistent.

  1. Ritualize, the less you leave up to chance the better your chances for success.
  2. Recognize; just by being aware of something, it helps you improve.
  3. ASK yourself; how good will you feel when you win this fight-thru? And also, this other opposite questions, how will I feel if I lose this fight-thru?
  4. Life Projection: where will your life be if you are able to win all your fight-thrus in the next 5 years?

————————-

EVALUATION:

Most people tend to evaluate themselves in a negative way. They tend to focus on the negative, so they make the “negative” stronger. They key here is to focus on what you are doing great and what you want to improve.

The power of focusing in “processes” instead of goals per se. processes are actions, goals are outcomes.

Most of us, at one time or another, feel frustrated about not reaching our goals, but there is a better way, which is to focus on performance, on effort and on progress.

You might not achieve the goal but you made your very best effort, and at the same time you improve yourself and whatever is that you’re doing. This means you are wining.

The score doesn’t necessarily reflect the real score.  The real score is giving your absolutely best, your best effort.

So, it’s critical to develop an ongoing, daily evaluation, not only to see what you are doing right, and what you could have done better, but also, what do you want to improve tomorrow.

Success is about improving, about never ending improvement.

It´s critical to give yourself credit where credit is deserved.

You can ask yourself these questions,

  1. What did you do well in the last 24 hours?
  2. What one thing you want to improve in the next 24 hours?
  3. What is the one thing you could do differently in order to make the improvements?

Celebrate and forget. Self-evaluation is the most effective tool you can use.

LEARN TO TALK TO YOURSELF:

We have about 50.000 thoughts per day and about 80% tend to be negative.
Your default brain setting is to focus on problems, on what’s wrong, on the problem. It´s called PCT-problem centric thought.

The challenge is that whatever you focus on, you tend to make stronger and expand on it. You are thinking about problems, you will make them bigger, stronger and more powerful.

The human mind is like fertile ground; it grows whatever you plant.

Your self-talk represents and affects your self-image.
You cannot under-perform or outperform your self-image for very long. You will perform as your self-image allows you to, it´s like your baseline, let’s say, a thermostat.

Your self-image is determined by what you consistently say to yourself about yourself. The good news is you have the power to direct your self-image by adjusting and directing your self-talk.

By directing your self-talk you can direct your self-image.

Something as easy as, “Today I am strong. Today I am healthy. Today I am a beast”.

IDENTITY STATEMENT:

This is one of the most powerful tools you can use for personal transformation.

Here you create an empowering statement about your strengths or the ones you want to have.

(I was listening the other day Connor McGregor being interviewed by Tony Robbins say this; “I am an animal, I have an insane work ethic, I am the best”)

It´s like a personal mantra you repeat to yourself constantly, it becomes part of you, and who you are. When you repeat it over and over it manifest itself into reality. The more you repeat it and more emotion you use the more powerful it will become

(Ali, used to repeat while training, “I am the Best, I am the Best, I am the Best” 1000s of times).

Your personal identity statement dramatically affects your self-image and, therefore, your performance.

PERSONAL SUCCESS MOVIE:

This is another exceptional tool you can use. Here you create a mental movie with:
1. Your past biggest successes
2. Your future successes
.

This can be short, about 60 seconds each.

MOST IMPORTANT IDEAS:

  1. Most people confuse being busy with being productive. The most successful people are productive. They do the most important things. They accomplish more of the important stuff. The key to success is about prioritization. It’s probably the most underrated skill of the high achievers, and it’s the biggest difference between being busy and being productive, or being average and being exceptional.Write down the 3-MOST IMPORTANT things you need to get done next day. Write it down as well as the time of completion. Then choose the MOST important to do tomorrow. Do this the day before, ahead of time, so you get it out of your mind.

The key here is you are writing them one day in ADVANCE.

Evaluate yourself daily in a constructive way: Evaluate what you are doing well, and what you want to improve. Build yourself up one victory or achievement at a time.

  2. Create your Powerful personal identity statement, this is a powerful statement about yourself, or how you want to be. Something like, “I am the hardest worker in the world. I am the best. I always find a way to win. I love life”. This statement must be repeated constantly. Your self-talk affects your self-image. And your self-image affects your performance.
  3. Create your own personal SUCCESS MOVIE:
Remember past successes, and create a mental movie of future ones. You can do each in 60 seconds.
  4. Eliminate all “Viable” Excuses, and Become 100% ACCOUNTABLE for your actions and your life.
  5. FOCUS on what you can control: People who are depressed tend to focus on what they can´t control. Focus on what you can control,
    -Your effort
    -Your attitude
    -Your preparation
    -How you use your time
    -Your organization.
  6. BECOME SOLUTION ORIENTED: Move from a problem centric thought-PCT, into a Solution centric thought-SCT. Focus your time and energy on solutions. Ask yourself, what one thing I can do to improve this?
Whatever you focus on, it expands. Focus on small incremental improvements.Don´t whine
    Don´t Complain
    Don´t make excuses.

“The noise of the urgent creates the illusion of the importance”
Stephen Covey
