I love helping people become Exceptional.
Today we have an awesome book by David Goggins, “Can´t Hurt Me”.
This is another great book about defying the odds and becoming unstoppable.
If you are surrounded by doubters, this is a must-read book.
As David says, “Anybody can become a totally different person and achieve what the so-called experts claim is impossible”
I first read about David in Jesse Itzler great book, “Living with a SEAL: 31-Days Training with the toughest Man on the Planet”.
In this new book David tells the story of his life, from poverty, physical abuse, depression and obesity into the only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force Tactical Controller, and setting records in numerous endurance events, inspiring Outside Magazine to name him “The Fittest (Real) Man in America”
In this book David explains the 40% rule, that is the capability most people use and how to use the rest.
As he says, “Don´t let your sorry present become your f-cked up future”.
One of my favorite parts of David´s story, and one who can inspire anyone who wants to do a personal transformation, is how he went from being 300+ pounds, obese, eating junk food the whole day, not moving at all, unable to run a quarter mile continuously, to a complete personal transformation in about 90 days, doing 8-hour training days, losing about 80 pounds and getting in super-shape.
His main motivation was getting into SEAL training. He would put Going the Distance while running and biking, blasting his ears.
Here are a few great ideas I Got from the book……as well as some of the challenges David invites you to take…..
You can get the book here, https://davidgoggins.com/book/
THE HEALING POWER OF “PURPOSE-SUFFERING”
David fought out pain, fell in love with suffering and transformed himself from a “weak piece of shit” (his words) to the hardest man God ever created, or so he told himself.
He realized not all physical and mental limitations are real, and people have the habit of giving up way too soon.
David believes you and almost everybody lives at about 40% of their true capacity. We all have the potential for so much more.
I love this idea from David, “There is always be the 1% of Percent of us who are Willing to Put in the Work and Defy the odds”.
From the time you take your first breath, you are eligible to die. You are always on an extinction threat. You are also able to find your greatness and become the ONE Warrior you can become. In order to live a BOLD life filled with accomplishments most people consider beyond their capacity you have to master your mind and learn to suffer.
It’s amazing what the body and mind are capable of when they are driven to their maximum capacity. When you are driven, nothing can stop you, not divorce, not bankruptcy, not obesity, not tragedy, nothing when you become your maximum expression.
CHALLENGE # 1
Take inventory of your limiting factors or the ones you think they are limiting you. Write them down on your diary, or on my TotalSuccess App, The #1 Success Platform in the World.
ONE STORY CAN INSPIRE YOU:
David the amazing story of Scott Gearen surviving a free fall from 13.000 feet after another skydiver knocked him unconscious in a mid-air collision.
Gearen bounce like a flat basketball, 3 times, but because he was unconscious, his body was limp and he was able to survive. The doctors told him he would never fully recover and wouldn’t be able to be a pararescueman again.
He defied the odds, as well as the “experts” expectations and 18 months later was back on the job he loved; pararescue.
Don’t let no expert opinions stop you from doing what you want and love doing.
David became obsessed with this story because Scott had survived the impossible, and it resonate with his survival.
THE ACCOUNTABILITY MIRROR:
David developed several empowering rituals, one of them was shaving is face and scalp every night, write his goals on post-It notes, tagged them on the mirror, which he now calls the Accountability Mirror, and hold himself accountable for the goals he wrote, which at the beginning very small ones like shaping up his appearance.
This is a strategy you can use in your own life.
This Accountability Mirror can help you understand how much of your life you have wasted, living without purpose. This negativity you are feeling is your internal desire to transform, to make the necessary changes.
Be honest when you look at the mirror. If you are obese don’t tell yourself that you are a little overweight. NO. Be complete honest with yourself. You are obese!
THE FIRST STEP IN CHANGING SOMETHING IS BEING BRUTALLY HONEST WITH YOURSELF.
David´s trademark is discomfort. The whole book is about the benefit of purposely making yourself uncomfortable to win over yourself, become tougher and break away from the victim´s mentality.
David trained himself to crave discomfort. If it was raining, he would go run. If it started snowing, he would make himself go run too. If he got a little soft on himself, he would go back to the accountability mirror.
This mirror motivated him to fight through uncomfortable experiences and because of that, he became tougher. And being tougher help him achieve his goals easier.
Living with purpose changed everything for him.
He realized how the people who made David feel uncomfortable, how uncomfortable they were in their own skin.
True confidence comes from personal accountability which brings you self-respect, and self-respect makes your life better, much better.
If you don´t start walking the path of most resistance, you would end up in mediocrity trap forever.
Get real with yourself. Don’t massage your ego here. This is about taking accountability and becoming real.
Tack Post-It notes on your accountability mirror. Write your insecurities, your goals, your dreams, your desires, and place them on your mirror, and look at it every day.
Whatever you want to change, whatever you want to do, create, transform, place it on the mirror.
Whatever you goal, you will need to feel yourself accountable.
BECOMING A SEAL: A PERSONAL TRANSFORMATION
They say that if you want to change or improve something, the easiest way is to join a group in which your desire behavior are their standard values and behavior.
In other words, what you want to achieve is HOW THEY BEHAVE.
So, this is exactly what David did. He joined the SEAL teams.
The SEALS were everything that David wasn´t at the time, so it was a huge inspiration for him. There were about pride, dignity, and extreme excellence, getting beat, and going back for more, again and again.
They were the hardest, sharpest people you could be surrounded by. They took the pounding as long as necessary, over and over, until they were fearless, and deadly.
They were motivated, they were driven to be their best.
He graduated with another 21 proud men.
This is a powerful speech by his commander officer:
“In a society where mediocrity is to often the standard and too often rewarded, there is intense fascination with men who detest mediocrity, who refuse to define themselves in conventional terms, and who seek to transcend traditionally recognized human capabilities.
This is exactly the type of person BUD/S is meant to fight. The man who finds a way to complete each and every task to the best of his ability. The man who will adapt and overcome all obstacles.
ANOTHER PERSONAL TRANSFORMATION:
After watching Rocky movie, he got inspired and made a decision. He would get in shape. He knew if he continued on the same path he would die of a heart attack or something similar.
He threw all the junk food out in the trash and went out running, he was over 300 pounds and on the first run he couldn’t even run a quarter mile. His legs felt severe pain. He created a plan from scratch.
When he joined SEAL training he was around 215, he had lost over 80 pounds and got in the best shape of his life, being faster and stronger than ever in his life. A complete turnaround.
THIS IS DAVID´S TYPICAL WORK OUT DAY, FOR LOSING MASSIVE WEIGHT AND GETTING IN SHAPE: 8-HOUR TRAINING DAYS
-He would wake up at 4.3 a.m., get a banana and hit the ASVAB books.
–At 5 a.m. he would take the books and study on the stationary bike and sweat for 2 hours. (his body was a mess, and he couldn’t even run several miles, so he had to burn as many calories as he could on the bike)
-After that he would go to Carmel High School and swim for another 2 hours.
-Then he hit the gym for a circuit workout that included the bench press, the incline press, and a lot of leg exercises. He needed lots of reps to burn calories and tone. He was doing 100-200 reps of six sets each.
-After dinner HE WOULD GO ANOTHER 2 HOURS IN THE BIKE, then go to bed and do it all again the next day.
So, he was training about 8 plus hours per day.
This is what Tony Robins would have called MASSIVE ACTION PLAN. What a transformation from being a couch potato with over 300 pounds to exercising 8 hours a day, losing massive amount of weight, getting in shape express.
Within 2 weeks HE DROPPED 25 POUNDS. In about a month he lost 50 pounds, and begun doing push ups, pull-ups, and started running.
Soon he started doing 100-pull ups at a time.
Some days he saw little progress and got frustrated but he couldn’t afford to plateau, his goal was SEAL training and he had to lose the weight.
THE TEMPTATION TO PULL BACK WAS PRESENT, AND DAVID ALWAYS REFUSED.
CHALLENGE #3; Do something that sucks every day.
The first step on the journey toward a tough mind IS STEPPING OUTSIDE YOUR COMFORT ZONE ON A REGULAR BASIS.
Write in your journal all the things that make you uncomfortable, they you don’t like to do. Choose the ones that are good for you and make them, force yourself to make these things regularly.
Go and do one of them NOW. And do it again.
Do something that sucks every day, even if it’s as simple as making your bed, doing the dishes or running a block every day. DO IT.
We tend to focus on our strength, this exercise is to focus on your weakness and do them. Take a photo of yourself in the discomfort zone.
You got to do some voluntary torture to become better, to become your best and to leave that place of comfort and physical mediocrity as a standard.
HELL WEEK: hell suffering!
It´s very easy to quit in Hell week, probably the toughest week in military training in the world, with a few hours of sleep per day, and going to the edge of your limits and then some more. All you have to do is ring the bell three times and the suffering stops. But that won’t make your life any easier. It never does.
“Everything in life is a mind game! Whenever we get swept under by life´s dramas, large and small, we are forgetting that no matter how bad the pain gets, no matter how harrowing the torture, all bad things end”
Hell week is designed to show you that you are capable of much more you think you are. It opens new possibilities of human potential and the corresponding change in your mentality. You realize that no matter what they do to you, they cannot break you.
The reason it´s critical to push yourself the hardest when you want to quit the most is because it helps you make your mind unbreakable. It´s the same reason you have to do your best work and give your best when you are least motivated to do so. You conquer yourself.
Physical challenges strengthen your mind so you are ready for whatever life throws at you.
Don’t just write your goals and achievement hit list, BUT ALSO INCLUDE THE OBSTACLES YOU WILL HAVE TO OVERCOME TO HIT THOSE GOALS.
That’s what a lot of people are missing. When the challenges show up they don´t know what to do. Include the challenges and obstacles you will encounter along the way and prepare for those. See yourself overcoming them and becoming better and stronger along the way.
THE EPIDEMIC OF SETTLING FOR LESS:
These are some of my favorite lines from the book,
“We habitually settle for less than out best; at work, in school, in our relationships, and on the playing field or race course. We settle as individuals, and we teach our children to settle for less than their BEST, and all of that ripples out, merges, and multiplies within our communities and society as a whole.
In that moment, the cost of missing out on so much excellence in this eternally fucked-up world felt incalculable to me, and it still does. I haven’t stop thinking about it since”
This is an exceptional book with an exceptional story about David Goggin’s. I believe every leader, or aspiring to be one should read this book. It’s truly a blessing, remember, to, every day, make yourself purposely uncomfortable in some way that you know it´s good for you.
There are countless roads to self-realization, though most of them demand intense discipline and extraordinary effort, and very few people are willing to go through them.
In south Africa, the San people dance for over 30 hours straight as a way to commune and connect with the divine.
In Tibet, monks meditate in cold freezing temperatures at the top of mountains being covered with just a robe.
In Japan there is a group of Zen monks that run 1000 marathons in 1000 days in their quest to find enlightenment through pain and suffering.
Whatever you choose to do, one thing is true, PAIN UNLOCKS A SECRET PATHWAY IN THE MIND. One that leads to a new experience.
When you persist and resist past to the point that pain fully saturates the mind, you become single-pointed. The external world kind of disappears. Boundaries and limits dissolved, and you become connected to yourself, to your full potential as a human being.
These are the moments of total connection and power, when you overcome yourself.

THE ONLY EASY DAY WAS YESTERDAY.
It´s You Against the Pain. There is nowhere to hide.
“We are staying on this motherfucker”
Peaceful but NEVER Satisfied.
“Since that night in Hell Week, I´ve deployed that Taking Souls concept countless times. Taking Souls is a ticket to finding YOUR OWN RESERVE POWER and riding a second wind. It´s the tool you call upon to win any competition or overcome every life obstacle”.
“I´d come to SEAL training to see if I was hard enough to belong and found an inner beast within that I never knew existed. A beast that I would tap into from then on whenever life went wrong. From the time I emerged from that ocean I considered myself unbreakable”.
“If you can manage those moments of pain that come with maximum effort, by remembering what you´ve through to get to that point in your life, you will be in a better position to persevere and choose fight over flight. That will allow you to use the adrenaline that comes with a new sympathetic response to go even harder”
“There is so much pain and suffering involved in physical challenges that is the best training to take command of your inner dialogue, and newfound mental strength and confidence you gain by continuing to push yourself physically will carry over to other aspects in your life”.
